Model UN Conference in Athens

From the 1-6 March senior pupils from our Model United Nations Club travelled to Athens for a 3 day conference at Platon School. PS-MUN is the largest conference of its kind in Greece and this year hosted more than 600 delegates from 12 nations including Greece, Scotland, Israel, Palestine, Zimbabwe, Portugal, and Austria to name just a few.

The pupils began the trip on the Thursday with a day touring the main sights of Athens with visits to the Acropolis, Hadrian’s Arch and the Panathenaic Stadium as well as the beautiful and historic area of Plaka. On Friday pupils were bussed to the event where they were involved in a full day of lobbying which involved preparing resolutions with other delegates in their committee on the topics they had prepared for prior to the event. Rebecca (S6), Honey (S6) and Nicola (S6) all submitted and introduced resolutions for Chile during the conference which had been prepared during the day of lobbying. Stephen (S5) made some very good contributions to his committee involving their resolutions. Day 2 saw the delegates debate, amend, give points of information and vote on resolutions that had been prepared the day before. Ogooluwa (S5) and John (S5) both submitted amendments during debate time which they successfully argued for, and had passed. Day 3 saw four of the committees move into a General Assembly arena and Honey saw her resolution picked as one to be debated amongst an audience of around 300 delegates. Honey delivered a fantastic opening speech to introduce the resolution on behalf of Chile and took 15 minutes of points of information from the delegations present. Sophie (S5) submitted a point of information during the General Assembly relating to the issue of sustainable cities. The event ended with Honey and Nicola being awarded with honourable mentions which was a fantastic achievement. Well done to all of the pupils involved for their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm. They each did Albyn School very proud.

Well done team!
