On Sunday 6 March, a group of cadets travelled down to RAF Halton to compete in the Royal Air Squadron Trophy National Final. This is the first time the section has qualified for the National Final after finishing in 2nd place in the Regional Qualifier early in the year.
The final is made up of the 15 top qualifiers from across the UK, all competing in:
• drill and inspection
• first aid
• aircraft recognition
• general knowledge about the RAF
• shooting
• leadership task
Each of these disciplines is individually scored and the best from all 6 is awarded the Royal Air Squadron Trophy.
The Albyn team were cautiously optimistic entering the competition, hoping to try and achieve a top 10 place. They more than exceeded these expectations.
• They placed 3rd overall for drill and inspection.
• They placed 2nd overall for aircraft recognition.
• They placed 1st overall for the leadership task and took home the trophy for this discipline.
• For the overall competition the placed 5th.
Flight Lieutenant Macklin said:
“The cadets have worked extremely hard over the past year preparing for these competitions and are extremely proud of what they have been able to achieve. Well done everyone!”
