Classical Civilisations & Latin
Studying Classics at Albyn School allows our pupils to gain insight to what life would have been like in different times across different parts of the world, whilst studying beautiful literature & poetry and appreciating spectacular artwork . By learning about the history, culture and myths of times gone by, our pupils will begin to recognise the areas of which our modern world have been impacted by these ancient civilisations.
Teaching Latin is a significant part of our Classics course, which not only has proven to enhance pupil’s general literacy but is essential for pupils who may wish to go on to study law after Albyn. Pupils begin to learn Latin in S1 and can gain a GCSE in the language in S3 & 4, a Higher in S5 and also an A Level in S6 if they wish.
Our pupils will explore topics such Greek and Roman civilisations, learning about daily life in Athens and Pompeii. They will learn about leisure and entertainment during those times which in Baths and Gladiators, and will explore the world of myth through poetry and drama.

- Latin Literature Themes
- Translating
- Literary Appreciation
Our Classics teachers use a variety of methods to teach pupils about these topics, including getting them to participate in re-enactments, attending plays and exhibitions throughout Scotland and also organising an expedition to Rome during our annual Activities Week.
Our Classics course gives our pupils an advantage when applying to university to study degrees in law, history and politics however even outwith these fields of study, it should not be underestimated how enriching Classics can be in ways people may not expect.
