English

Our English department offer a variety of experiences through which our pupils will develop skills in reading, writing, listening and talking, whilst fostering an enduring appreciation for literature and reading within our pupils. By the time our pupils complete the course they will have acquired a foundation of knowledge which not only prepares them for managing a university workload, but will also be essential within any career path they choose.

The department offer a progressive curriculum which includes texts from a wide range of modern and classic literature and film. Our enthusiastic and dedicated teachers also maintain cross-curricular ties with numerous other subjects within the School to identify areas where English can relate to other disciplines.

Topics covered in our English course include:

  • Literacy
  • Analysis and Evaluation
  • Creation and Production

Outside of the day to day work of the classroom our pupils are able to experience talks and workshops from best-selling authors as well as trips to the theatre to see such plays as ‘The Woman in Black’, ‘Sunset Song’ and ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’. Personal reading is encouraged through close links with the school library, reading programmes and an extra-curricular book group, as well as taking part in the Grampian Children’s Book Award each year.

Through these methods and more, the English Department prides itself on helping high achieving pupils to meet their full potential as well as providing extensive support for pupils who find the course more of a challenge.

English is a requirement for a vast amount of university courses and has been particularly essential for our recently leavers who have gone on to study in areas such as law and education. We are confident that the majority of our pupils leave with the crucial skills to get them to where they want to be, but our hope is that they leave enriched with an appreciation for literature.
