Albyn School Reflects on Strong 2026 Examination Results

Now that the excitement of results day has settled, we have taken the opportunity to look more closely at this year’s Qualifications Scotland examination results, and the picture is one of sustained academic success, widespread improvement and strong outcomes for pupils.

Across National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher, 94% of entries achieved an A-C grade, matching Albyn’s overall performance in 2025. Looking beyond the headline figure, the results reveal encouraging progress in the number of pupils achieving the highest grades. Across 64% of courses, the number of A passes increased compared with 2025, demonstrating that improvement was seen across a broad range of subjects rather than being concentrated in just a small number of areas.

The results reflect a focused approach to teaching and learning, with staff continually evaluating pupil progress and using that insight to inform classroom teaching and examination preparation. Pupils have also benefited from thorough exam preparation and revision, helping them to approach their assessments with confidence and make the most of their academic potential.

A particular highlight was the performance of pupils who were presented for examinations early. Every pupil who sat an examination early achieved an A grade, across National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher.

There was also strong performance across a wide range of individual subjects. Chemistry, Computing Science, Economics, Engineering Science, English, French, Geography, History, Mathematics and PE all outperformed the national average at every level, demonstrating the breadth and consistency of academic achievement across the school.

The biggest improvements in A-C pass rates compared with 2025 were seen in Higher PE and Higher Engineering Science, highlighting the progress made by pupils in these subjects.

A significant strength behind the results is the expertise of Albyn’s teaching staff. A high proportion of teachers undertake duties with Qualifications Scotland, giving them valuable experience and insight into assessment and examination standards. This expertise, combined with ongoing evaluation of pupil progress, helps staff to identify where pupils can improve and ensure that preparation is targeted effectively.

Lynda Strachan, Deputy Head (Learning and Teaching), said:

“Now that we have had the opportunity to look beyond the initial results and examine the details, we are incredibly encouraged by what they tell us. Maintaining an overall A-C performance of 94% while seeing an increase in A passes across 64% of our courses demonstrates both consistency and progress. It is particularly pleasing to see that improvement reflected across such a broad range of subjects.

Our teachers continually evaluate how pupils are progressing and use that information to shape learning and provide the right level of challenge and support. Combined with thorough examination preparation and revision, this gives our pupils the best possible opportunity to achieve their potential. We are also extremely proud of our pupils who sat examinations early and achieved A grades across National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. That is a remarkable achievement and reflects both their ability and the preparation they received.”

The strength of the examination results is complemented by another significant achievement: 100% of Albyn’s school leavers have secured a positive destination. Every leaver is progressing to their next stage, whether that is university, college, employment or an apprenticeship.

This year’s leavers are heading to a wide range of destinations and pursuing diverse interests, with university courses including physiotherapy, law, nursing, medicine, astrophysics, mathematics, business and engineering. Others are beginning careers through employment and apprenticeships or progressing to further study at college.

For Albyn, these destinations are an important part of the wider picture. Academic results matter, but so too does ensuring that pupils leave school with the confidence, skills and resilience to take their next step and make the most of the opportunities available to them.

Ms Strachan added:

“The fact that every one of our leavers has secured a positive destination is something we are incredibly proud of. Our pupils are leaving Albyn with strong academic foundations, but also with the skills and confidence to pursue their individual ambitions.

Our approach is centred on knowing our pupils as individuals, understanding their strengths and aspirations, and providing the support and challenge they need to fulfil their potential. This year’s results provide another strong example of what that approach can achieve.”

The results provide a positive reflection of Albyn’s approach to education. The school has maintained its strong overall performance, while seeing improvement in A passes across almost two-thirds of courses, outstanding results from pupils sitting examinations early and performance above national averages across a broad range of subjects. Combined with 100% positive destinations for school leavers, the results demonstrate an educational experience that aims not only to help pupils achieve strong examination results, but to prepare them for the opportunities and challenges that come next.

As the new academic year begins, Albyn will build on this success, continuing to provide an environment where pupils are known, supported and encouraged to aim high, both inside and beyond the classroom.
