Celebrating Modern Languages at Albyn

At Albyn language learning begins early. French is introduced from Primary 1, giving pupils the opportunity to develop their skills, confidence and enjoyment of the language over a number of years. From Primary 6, pupils are also introduced to Spanish and German, opening the door to even more languages, cultures and ways of seeing the world.

For Nadine Lamont, our Faculty Head of Languages, the benefits of learning a language go far beyond being able to communicate in another tongue.

“Learning a modern language gives children so much more than another way to communicate. It opens up another culture and gives them a sense of the wider world from a really young age. Learning another language also supports pupils’ literacy development in English, while helping them develop important personal skills such as confidence, resilience and perseverance. Listening carefully, remembering new vocabulary, having a go and making mistakes are all part of the process,” Mrs Lamont explains.

This sense of curiosity and willingness to have a go is at the heart of language learning at Albyn. Starting young allows pupils to build their confidence over time, giving them the opportunity to explore language and culture in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.

From the classroom to an internationally recognised qualification

One of the most exciting opportunities available to our pupils is the chance to take the DELF (Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française) exams.

DELF is an internationally recognised French-language qualification awarded by the French Ministry of Education, and Albyn is currently the only school in Scotland offering DELF to pupils at primary school age.

For our pupils, DELF provides an opportunity to see just how far their French has come. As they begin learning French in P1, pupils have several years to develop their knowledge and confidence before taking the exam. By that stage, DELF becomes a natural next step in their learning.

Rather than simply learning vocabulary, pupils use their French across the four key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, working towards a genuine qualification.

For a primary-aged pupil, achieving an internationally recognised qualification is a wonderful accomplishment. It gives them something tangible to celebrate and demonstrates what they can achieve through sustained effort and determination.

As Mrs Lamont says:

“They can look back and think, ‘I worked hard for this, I was nervous, but I did it.’”

That experience of setting a challenging goal and achieving it can have a lasting impact. It builds confidence and shows children that their learning has a purpose beyond the classroom.

We were delighted to celebrate the achievements of our pupils who recently received their DELF certificates, recognising the hard work and commitment they put into developing their French.

Looking beyond the classroom

The opportunity to work towards DELF reflects Albyn’s wider approach to language learning. We want our pupils not only to enjoy learning languages, but to understand where those languages can take them.

French, Spanish and German give pupils the opportunity to discover different cultures and perspectives, while developing the confidence to communicate with others.

DELF also provides valuable experience of working towards a formal qualification and is excellent preparation for the National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher language examinations available to pupils in Upper School.

Ultimately, our aim is for pupils to leave Albyn as confident communicators who are curious about other cultures, resilient in their learning and comfortable looking beyond their own experience.

As Mrs Lamont puts it:

“We want children to leave primary school not only with strong language skills, but with the confidence to communicate, the curiosity to explore and the enthusiasm to keep learning.”
