Two Nights to Remember: Celebrating 'A Hundred Years on Queen’s Road'

20 March ‘26

Our recent two-night musical spectacular, “A Hundred Years on Queen’s Road,” was nothing short of extraordinary – a truly memorable way to celebrate this very special milestone in our school’s history.

Performed at the Tivoli Theatre, the production brought together a talented cast of 70 pupils from both Lower and Upper School, alongside former pupils and a live band – including two of our very own current pupils, Angus (S2) and Jonathan (S5). It was a wonderful showcase of the creativity, confidence and collaboration that define our school community.

More than a musical, the show was a journey through time. It beautifully brought the story of Albyn to life, celebrating 100 years on Queen’s Road through a vibrant blend of storytelling, humour and music. The narrative took audiences on a rich historical journey, from the challenges of the Second World War – including the evacuation of pupils to Blelack House in Aberdeenshire – to the resilience shown during the typhoid outbreak in Aberdeen in the 1960s.

The decades unfolded on stage with warmth and energy, from the spirit of the 1970s, featuring a memorable trip to London for the national finals of the Southbank Show Choir Competition, to more recent milestones such as the arrival of boys to Albyn in 2005. The story also touched on the shared experience of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, reflecting the strength and adaptability of our school community in modern times.

Well-loved hits from Fame, Hairspray, Matilda and The Greatest Showman to name a few, were cleverly woven into the narrative, delighting audiences with familiar tunes, energetic performances and moments of real emotion.

Across both evenings, audiences were captivated – laughing along with the comedy, tapping their feet to the tunes, and sharing in a real sense of pride and celebration. The feedback we have received has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the professionalism, talent and heart shown by everyone involved.

This production has been a long time in the making. The concept was first developed over a year ago, and it has been incredible to see it come to life on stage. Our sincere thanks go to Mrs Sinclair, Faculty Head of Creative Arts, and Mr Somerville, Principal Teacher of Music, who wrote and shaped this fantastic production, with support for the wider Creative Arts team; Mr Cowling, Ms Addison, Miss Williams and Mrs Macaskill. Their vision, dedication and creativity have made this such a special and meaningful event.

The musical also marks the culmination of a busy and highly successful period for our Faculty of Creative Arts. Recent highlights have included performances at Cowdray Hall, participation in the Burns North East Federation Festival, an appearance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and the much-anticipated Albyn School Musician of the Year. Each of these events has showcased the depth of talent within our school, and this production was a fitting celebration of all that has been achieved.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to all those who supported the production behind the scenes. With special thanks to Lawsound, AXV, UNreality Films, Black Tartan Events, Lauren Beare, Sandra Rae and the Tivoli Theatre.

As we reflect on this centenary celebration, 'A Hundred Years on Queen’s Road' will undoubtedly stand out as a highlight – a joyful, creative and heartfelt tribute to our school’s past, present and future.

A huge well done to everyone involved. It is a moment we will remember for many years to come.
