Our Hybrid Curriculum
Introduction
The Aberdeen French School’s hybrid curriculum is a considered mix of the key foundations of French education alongside subjects available through the Albyn School curriculum.
Pupils attending the French School will have selected subjects taught by French teachers in our dedicated French School classrooms; they will also benefit from the Albyn School curriculum including specialist teaching in all other areas. Pupils will be allocated a Clan and will be part of the wider Albyn School community.

French Common Core
The French Government's Common Core of Knowledge and Skills underpins the French curriculum and sets out the minimum standards to be attained by all by the end of compulsory schooling.
It is organised around seven key competencies:
- Command of the French language;
- Proficiency in a modern foreign language;
- The key elements of mathematics, scientific culture and technology;
- Mastery of ordinary information and communication skills;
- Humanist culture;
- Social and civic skills;
- Autonomy and initiative.
Those following the hybrid curriculum will be assessed using the French system of assessment at the end of Primary 3 (CE2), Senior 1 (sixième) and in Senior 2 / 3 (troisième) when pupils sit a national exam, Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB).
More details about the French curriculum are available on the dedicated Aberdeen French School mflmonde website, rubrique “pédagogie”.
French Hybrid Curriculum
Albyn School Nursery provides early years education for children aged 2 to 5 years old whereas L’École Maternelle is aimed at children aged 3-5 years. There is no formal hybrid curriculum for Nursery and all children are taught through the medium of English.
For children aged 5 to 12 years, Lower School is broadly equivalent to L’École Primaire.
Those following the French hybrid curriculum will be taught the following subjects in the French language medium:
Mathematics (4 hours per week); French (5 - 6 hours per week); History, Geography and Citizenship (2-3 hours per week); Physics (introduced in Primary 7)
All other areas will be taught in English with Albyn School Lower School classes, giving children the opportunity to develop their skills of numeracy and literacy while being introduced to a wide variety of new subjects using the cross curricular format of the International Primary Curriculum and unique ACE programme. Subject specialists from the Upper School teach Art, Music, Physical Education and Sport.
More details about the French curriculum are available on the dedicated Aberdeen French School mflmonde website, rubrique “pédagogie”.
Pupils aged 12-15 years are taught in the Upper School which is the equivalent of Le Collège.
S1 and S2
Our French pupils following the hybrid curriculum will continue the study of French, Mathematics, Geography, History, Citizenship and Physics (introduced in Primary 7) through the medium of French.
For the remainder of the subjects, pupils will follow a broad range of subjects in English through the Albyn School curriculum. These include core subjects such as English, Mathematics, all three sciences, IT, Technology, two foreign languages and a range of arts, humanities and social science subjects. In addition, pupils will undertake Games, Physical Education (PE) and PSE (Personal and Social Education) as part of their Clan.
S3 and S4
French pupils following the hybrid curriculum will continue the study of French, Mathematics, Geography, History, Citizenship and Physics through the medium of French. Together with Physical Education and Sport, they will study alongside Albyn School pupils for selected Scottish National examination courses - there is some flexibility in the exact choices made from a multitude of options. In addition, pupils will undertake Games, Physical Education (PE) and PSE (Personal and Social Education) as part of their Clan.
